Summer Learning Journey - Week 1 - Day 5 - Activity 1

This year Panmure Bridge School is lucky enough to participate in the Summer Learning Journey from 2018-2019. This is an opportunity for the Manaiakalani cluster school to join. For the Summer Learning Journey we are given tasks to finish. The people who place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd from each school wins exclusive prizes. The prizes this year is amazing. Above shows another place to stand activity that I completed for the Summer Learning Journey. To complete this activity I was to tell others whether I think that logging should be allowed in New Zealand and why. My answer to this is yes. I think that we should allow logging in New Zealand, because  I think that more homeless people need houses, products, and heat/power. My other reason it that being able to log our trees would be good, because not only does it help our homeless people, but it can help kids in school with anything that needed like stationary, and it was also help groups donate money to others in the hospital.

  1. Hello Mele,
Yes I think wood is very important because just like you said it helps us a lot and we wouldn't have the things we had today like a pencil if it wasn't for wood!. Keep it up!

  2. Hi Mele,
Great job on completing this activity! I liked how you said that we should allow logging because it can help with building homes for people that need them. I also liked how you said that some of the wood gained from cutting the trees down could be used for stationary and other things that schools use. Do you think there should be a limit to how much people can chop down?

  3. Hi there Mele,

I must say, it's very interesting to hear what you have to say. Yes, you are absolutely correct, logging will definitely provide opportunities for people to have jobs, good thinking! I love the way you have thought about this topic as well as the ideas you have come up with and I agree with you. We definitely do need to continuously build houses, furniture and use firewood but we also need to be careful about how much forest we are cutting down so we must find a good balance, what do you think?

Although logging creates many opportunities and products that are useful to us, it also has a negative impact on the environment and it forces animals to give up their homes and try to find new ones. Unfortunately, these animals aren't always successful so it's really important that we start planting more trees in our country to keep it alive, well and beautiful. In fact, the government has set a goal to plant one billion trees by the year 2028. That's a lot of trees! If you would like to find out more information about the One Billion Trees Programme, head on over to the website I have linked here:

    Keep up the wonderful work,
    Evelyn :)
