Summer Learning Journey - Activity 1 - Day 5 - Week 2

This year Panmure Bridge School is lucky enough to participate in the Summer Learning Journey from 2018-2019. This is an opportunity for the Manaiakalani cluster school to join. For the Summer Learning Journey we are given tasks to finish. The people who place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd from each school wins exclusive prizes. The prizes this year is amazing. I have completed most of the week 1 challenges, so I moved onto the week 2 challenges. The week 2 challenges is based on water, water, everywhere. For this task it was based on over fishing in New Zealand. Over fishing is when someone fishes in one area and then leaves the other area alone. When this happens it is called over fished, The rule is that if people are caught doing this they will be fined to pay the amount of $100, 000.

What do you think about this rule? I think that this rule is not fair, because people may be wanting to fish, because they have no food. To my opinion I dont think that is is fair to charge people this amount of money, because these days people need food to eat and if they have nothing the only this that is left is seafood.

  1. Hi Mele,
Wow I agree with you. Why should people get fined for just over fishing. You never know why they are doing this!. Glad to see you posting Mele, I'm proud. Keep it up!

  3. Hello Mele! I can agree with you on this. It is a hard decision picking one side in this type of situation so I think it's a little bit of fair and not fair at the same time. Would you be a fisher? Keep it up!

  4. Hi Mele,
I disagree with you, although I pretty sure that over-fishing only really applies to huge fishing boats. People shouldn't wipe out a species for their own profit. If you were a fish would you like it if all of your family was taken away?

  5. Hi Mele,
Great to see you active with the Summer learning journey. I agree with you they should get fined because they have no permission to fish in the property.

    What was the challenging part?

  6. Hey there Mele, it's Billy here from the Summer Learning Journey team. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on whether or not people should be fined up to $100,000 if they are caught over fishing.

You're right, people should definitely have the right to catch fish to feed themselves and their family. However, I think this rule is about preventing people from catching enormous amounts of fish on a much larger scale and then selling them on to other people, rather than feeding just their families alone. If this were to continue then unfortunately there would be no more fish in our seas. I would hate going to the fish and chip shop and only being able to order chips. It wouldn't be the same!

Have you ever been fishing before? If so, did you manage to catch anything?

    Thanks, Billy.
