The Deadly Flu of 1918

This week for reading, LS2 continued on from what they did last week. My group and I read the book - The Deadly Flu of 1918. After completing a session of reciprocal reading, our challenge was to summarise 5 sentences and then turn the 5 sentences into 10 syllable sentneces. To make it interesting we also, did literacy weaving. We used the blank spaces on the strip to write 2 words that summarise the big ideas in the story and 2 images that represent the story visually. Above shows the summary that we created and the liteacry weaving that we completed.

This week for current events, we were asked to find an article that insterested us. After reading it Marieta and I summarised it in our own words, before making it short and statistic in five 10 syllable senteneces.

She went straight to the doctors and ordered an X-ray. The x-ray showed her ring was right in her stomach. She was put to sleep again, as she was given an upper endoscopy to remove the ring.

10 syllable sentence:

Jenna Evans swallows engagement ring. Evans thought she was dreaming the whole time. She ordered an x-ray at the doctors. Her ring ended up in her intestines. She was given upper endoscopy.

Exploring International current events

Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make desicions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening around the world. We thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. Marieta and I worked collabritively together to find articles that realted to these groups. The most interesting article that we found out was,74 year old lady gives brith to twins to set world record, which took place in India. 

William Shakespeare

This week LS2 have been learning about William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare writes English poet, playwright and actor. He is famous for the stories he tells us about. Did you know that William Shakespeare created 6000 words that we use today. This DLO talks about William Shakespeare and the story Macbeth. Macbeth is about when a Macbeth killed the King just because he wanted to be King.

Exploring our national current events

Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make desicions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening in New Zealand, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. Most of the articles that Marieta and I read happened in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Together our favourite article was the new Wellington sculpture showing a large hand balanced on two fingers, with a human face on the palm. 

Provocation and Opinion

A provocation is an action or speech that trigers trong felings about a topic. Curently a major supermarket chain annoucned it wil no longer sell energy drinks to people under the age of 16. My opinion is recorded in my DLO that shows both perspectives. What is your opinion and why? Leave a comment down below for your answer. 

My Favourite Author

This week is book week at Panmure Bridge School, meaning every class gets to participate in a number of reading activities that are being organised. Above I have created a poster about my favourite author, Joy Cowley. To complete this task I added information about her life, the books that she have written, what inspired her and 3 questions that I'd ask her. I have also shown a photo of her. 

Reading Pathway

This week is book week at Panmure Bridge School, meaning every class participates in a number of reading activities. For one of the activities I created a reading pathway of my favourite books at a different age. As a 5 year old I loved reading Clifford the Big Red Dog. Right now I like to read the Amulet series, especially the comics that are provided. My favourite genre right now would have to be graphic novels, because the pictures always interest me, especially the words. 

Aesop Comic Strip

This week LS2 have been creating activities, since book week is being held. For this activity I have created a comic strip that retells one of Aesop's fables. My comic strip included a walnut tree by the road, with people walking past it. At the bottom of my drawing I have added the moral of this story, which is '' It is hard, '' it cried, '' that the very persons who enjoy my fruit should thus reward me with insults and blows''.  Did you know that he wrote stories and taught moral lessons?

Polynesian Panthers

For the past week in reading, Rakino group has been reading a text that all revolves around the story of the dawn raids and the Polynesian Panthers. If you did not know the Dawn Raids were evacuation protocols which involved the police going to Polynesian homes and forcing them to show their passports that stated whether they were allowed to live in the country. If demands were not met, they were locked up and later kicked out of the country. Our challenge was to read the text and answer questions. With this new found knowledge we needed to create a DLO that showed both perspectives of the issue. 

Summarising

This week for reading we have been looking at different types of ballad poems. The ballad poem that we talked about was the Waltzing Matilda. The Waltzing Matilda poem is a ballad poem, created by Banjo Paterson. Angela and I worked collaboratively to create this activity. Listening to the poem, we used our inference strategy to draw the clues in the poem. In my image I have included the features, of a Swagman lying underneath a Coolibah tree. We unpacked the language in the poem and identified what each word meant in it's own context. Above shows the summary that Angela and I have written together. We added 20 important words from the text, 6 most important words, and we used the 6 words to sum a whole summary about our story. 

Literary Devices

      This week LS2 has been focusing on poetry. A poetry is a short piece of writing that enhances 

      the readers imagination/feelings. Mrs Anderson challenged us to use google docs to create our            own google drawings, to understand the different types of literary devices that we use in writing. 

      It was fun and challenging at the same time, because we could only use the explore tool to get any

      information or images. This DLO explains the literary devices with their meanings and images. 

The Problem with Pluto - Venn Diagram

This term for reading we have been looking at different type of texts that are linked to our inquiry topic "SPACE". We have created different activities that relate to our chosen book. After reading our texts, we completed 6 activities to help us think deeply about the information in the texts. I have created a Venn diagram about 2 texts that I have already read, which are Sun Facts and The Problem with Pluto. A Venn diagram gives information about  the similarities and differences, on 2 different topics. Did you know that both books talk about the Solar System?

Celebrity Star Profile - Creating 3

This term for reading we have been looking at different type of texts that are linked to our inquiry topic "SPACE". We have created different activities that relate to our chosen book. After reading our texts, we completed 6 activities to help us think deeply about the information in the texts. For one of the activities I located  5-10 words that I found difficult to understand. I have created a brochure about the country that my story comes from. A brochure informs others about a specific place/country, as to why they should visit it. The interesting activity that I have completed for this book would be, explaining why the article has the title it does, because I formed many answers for my opinions. Did you know that America has no official language? 

Sun Facts - Creating 5

This term for reading we have been looking at different type of texts that are linked to our inquiry topic "SPACE". We have created different activities that relate to our chosen book. After reading our texts, we completed 6 activities to help us think deeply about the information in the texts. I have designed an information poster, that includes a variety of information and images about the Sun. Before starting on our own response, we commented on the activity that the person before us had completed, this lead to strong dialogic conversations as we strengthened our connections to the learning. A dialogic conversation is when 2 people challenge their partners, by forming different opinions. At the moment my favourite selection of activities would be creating.  

What word's Look Like

Today as an excitement for reading, Rakino group read Oakley Creek. This book was interesting, because it reflects back to our inquiry topic. We worked collaboratively as group, by giving each other the opportunity to read a sentence. For this we used reciprocal reading, which helps us understand what the book was about. After doing this we defined 2 important words, which were dilemma and guilt. These 2 words belong to someone has been peer pressured. Guilt is someone who knows that they did something wrong, but don't want to regret what actually happened. Dilemma is someone that is in the middle of a situation, that is finding it difficult to find the correct pathway. We each drew pictures that represented dilemma and guilt. My image is about someone who is finding it difficult to find the right path to enter. The reason why we did this task was to help us understand the meaning of these two words.

Current Events

 Today as a great start off to reading we completed another activity. This activity was completed in our collaborative groups. To complete this task we were to find 2 events about national and international events that had happened recently. We used a creative DLO that helped us write everything in. Pua, Te Pounamu, Avalon, Florence, and I worked collaboratively together for this task. We chose the articles about Fiji banning nets and children's day. We answered the 5 questions and 1 how. Our group also gave our own point of views to show that we have evidence.

Read Theory

Today as a start off to the morning we began with 15 minutes of read theory. Read theory is a reading site that develops our reading and English skills. This gives us a chance to read a text/article about a interesting topic. I am currently reading on grade 5. I am good at reading the text, but next time I need to find evidence to back up my answers.

Fair Trade

Last week's task for reading for my group (Rakino) was to first read a story called Fair Chocolate. In this story, we learnt about what a fair trade company is, how the fair trade chocolate company gets their cacao beans, and how the chocolate companies can help the cacao farmers live better. After we'd read the story we then needed to have a learning conversation with each other on different questions regarding the story and things in it. The next thing we needed to do was create a DLO about what fair trade companies are.

Summer Learning Journey Assembly

Today's assembly was a special assembly, because we were lucky enough to receive a visit from Sophie and Hazel from the Summer Learning Journey team. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that students are able to use during the holidays. This program includes a lot of activities about the whole world. Sophie and Hazel came along to present the prize winners and participants of the Summer Learning Journey. The statistics were amazing. Panmure Bridge School completed 1275 blog posts altogether and 2376 comments. We also received a special visit from Evelyn ( NZ Sailing Trust). Since Alex placed 1st and I placed 2nd we received a free voucher to the NZ Sailing Trust. Alex places 1st, I placed 2nd, and Victoria placed 3rd. The spot prize winners were Marieta, Florence, Chavda, and Sakina. The prize's were outstanding. Most of us received a bag with treats, colouring books, and more, which was great. One of the prizes was for the most participants class, which was awarded to Learning Space 1. This class received a bean bag. As a school we received a Pohutukawa tree to plant. Congratulations to Alex who was awarded a prize for the top blogger in the cluster and the school, even out of the whole world. A huge thank you to Hazel and Sophie for presenting these prizes and certificates to us.
