Explanation: Should NZ ban plastic straws?

Have you ever woken up to a day, thinking about the wider world? or ever thought about the feeling of a marine animal? Well today I am here to tell you a number of reasons as to why plastic straws should come to an end. You may of heard about this how many times, which can be boring, but there is more behind this problem. Straws can be useful to us in many different ways, but think about it, our sea animals who have no voice at all have the chance of suffering day by day.

Have you ever been to McDonalds, Burger King, Burgerfuel, or whatever you call it, and ordered a LARGE cup of your choice? Well I I have, but then you end up receiving a straw with it? If you were a person like me, I'd just open the lid, drink from it, and end up leaving the straw on it's own. As soon as I get home I either leave it on the floor without mum knowing, or just leave it lying in the bin. This poor straw has the chance of enjoying 500 years of life in the landfill/ or even worse in our oceans.

According to scientists, the amount of 65,000 plastic straws have been found on beaches from the last 10 years. I mean, what do people do with these straws? Even more shocking, straws have chemicals in it, which can cause a lot of problems. How would you feel if one of your family members went through this horrible situation? What would you do? I know right even more shocking than you thought! According to Getgreenow.co.nz there was a video showing a group of people removing a plastic straw from a sea turtles airway? Poor helpless turtles have to go through this every year, because of our shameless actions! How would you feel if this was you?

This is why our animals are dying! Each and everyone of us have at least thrown a straw away after one use, right? Most people act like it had been the straws fault, but since when did we have straws with feet on them? The problem is OUR actions! If we had taken more responsibility, believe me or not the statistics would've been lower than 65,000! Losing an animal is exactly the same as losing a family member.

  1. Hello Mele,
Wow your persuasive text is incredible. After reading your persuasive text it made me feel really bad that I am using straws. The amount of straws that has been found is shocking, 65,000 straws is a lot. Your writing has a lot of emotive in it, I think that you should add in a little bit more facts to make the reader know why plastic straws are causing bigger problems than what you think. What fact shocked you the most? Thank you and keep it up the great work!
