Summarising the Main Idea

L.I. To look for keywords and phrases

Summarising.jpg
Good readers notice key words.  Here are some clues to help you find key words:
  • Key words are directly connected to the topic
  • Key words are often repeated in the title and the text
  • A key word helps you to remember an important idea
Use this table to help you summarise the main ideas in a text in your own words.  It is important that you use your own words to show your understanding and to avoid plagiarism.  If you don’t know what some words mean, look them up.

Keywords from the title
Overboard

Keywords from subheadings

New words I need to look up
Stupendous
unddobtedley
athourties
Durable
Read the text and record key words/phrases that answer these questions:

What?
Unfortunately Ducks has been traveling all around the world ever since the ship had sank down from a big storm hit.
Where?
Indonesia, Australia, Japan, South America and North America,Hawaii,Hong Kong,Tacoma,Washington-United States.
When?
January 1992
Who?
Plastic yellow ducks.
Why?
A big storm has hit the ship that they were on.
How?

Now using the words you wrote down summarise the text in 25 words or less.

January 1992 Rubber ducks received a big stupendous storm from the sky. Rubber Ducks were sent of to shore from Hong Kong to Tomoca alive.

L.I. To look for keywords and phrases. This week we have three tasks to complete. This is the most important one to blog.We had to summarise an article called Duck Overboard. We had to skim and scan including the 5 w's and 1 h. After that we had to summarise the article in our own words. I learnt how to give more information on the 5 w's and 1 h. I learnt this by reading a article called Duck Over baord and finding the main ideas.
