Summer Learning Journey Activity 2 Day 4 Week Two
Today for this activity I had to Choose one from the Second World War, and read about him. On your blog tell us about him. Who was he? What did he do to earn a Victoria Cross medal? I decided to pick a New Zealander winner.
Who was he?: William Hardman. He was the first New Zealander born servicemen to receive the VC.
What did he do to earn the VC Award?: He won this because his unit was ambushed, and he rode back to pick up a wounded soldier, helping him to get off the under heavy fire.
Hi Mele
ReplyDeleteIt's Allie again from the SLJ team.
You have chosen a really great New Zealand soldier to tell us about.
I have read that he was a farrier in the army, which meant he carried for the horses, like making sure that had their shoes on etc. What a very brave thing to do, riding out on his horse under fire and then putting the injured soldier on his horse and running along side back to safety. This is one of the bravest things that I have read about.
I was really amazed at this story. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I would like to see a Victoria Cross medal one day. I see that his medal is in the museum at Waiouru. I have never been there but maybe one day I will.
Have you been to the museum in Auckland? I wonder if there are any Victoria Cross medal on display there.
Well done Mele, I really enjoyed reading about this great New Zealander. Thank you!
Until next time
Allie :)
Hello Mele
ReplyDeleteWell done on completing this summer learning journey activity. William Hardman sounds like a nice man, risking his life in order to save another person. Keep up the awesome work Mele!

Hi Mele
ReplyDeleteGreat job on completing this activity, I like how you even added in a picture of him. I have a question though, was it easy to find the information?
